I tried logging in as administrator and was able to write to the drive. I then inserted the USB stick into my desktop and attempted to boot from it but hte PC did not boot from it, (even though I went intot the BIOS and set the USB as the boot up location). It just reverted to booting from the harddrive.

HI

I am a newbie at this. I was wandering if you could please explain how I create a bootable USB flash drive from the IMG file that I can download from Hexxeh? I have a Windows 7 64 bit OS. I have tried 3 different tools and 2 versions of the IMG file and I get messages either that the file is not a proper file or that "an error occurs when attempting to get a handle on the device".

much appreciated

thanks

I just learned this trick:
curl http://ftp.drupal.org/files/projects/drupal-7.0.tar.gz | tar xvz
Saves just a bit of typing. I'm also not sure how it took me a decade to learn that!

I ended up putting a different card in the Dell, slightly newer than the FX 5200. It's not running Ubuntu anymore just XP Pro.

I ran Ubuntu directly off the CD before I installed it on the HP laptop to make sure all the hardware on the laptop was supported. Everything works fine, including the laptop's wireless. Old laptops make good servers.

Awesome! Way to make that laptop cling to life. I tried to install a better graphics card, much like the one you mention above, in an old desktop about a year ago. The card was too wide was bumping other components when I tried to install it, so it wouldn't work. Very old motherboard.

I'm certain you've already done this, but make certain that Linux drivers exist for those cards you are trying to install into your Ubuntu system.

Let us know how it goes!! This is exciting stuff for the uber-geeks in the group.
