Earthsea and The Librarian

Finally got around to watching both Earthsea and The Librarian. Tivo is great.

The Librarian: Question for the Spear was pretty good. Noah Wyle was great as the professional student who finally has to get a job, as guess what, a librarian. As a professional student/librarian myself I can identify. The movie doesn’t try to be too serious and that’s why it works, even if it does get some facts wrong. They seem to have confused Mayan and Incans, for example. But every librarian wants to work in a library that houses the Spear of Destiny, the Ark of the Covenant and Excalibur and save the world right?

Earthsea was a mixed bag. I liked the story but it wasn’t what I remembered from the books, (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu) although I only read the first two and that was a long time ago. I knew something was off but I couldn’t quite figure out what.

Ursula K. Le Guin knows what was wrong with the miniseries based on her books, and she’s letting people know. She wrote an essay for Slate and another for The Agony Column Book Reviews. The SciFi Channel has more news and has issued a statement.
